Much-branched climbers or creepers with up to 20 m long, herbaceous or suffrutescent shoots, perennial roots, and monoecious or dioecious sex system. The leaves are simple, palmately 3-7-lobed, less often 3-5-foliolate or entire, the blade often decurrent on the petiole, often with disc-shaped glands at the base. The tendrils are 2-7-fid (rarely simple – C. espelina), sometimes with apical adhesive pads. The flowers are small, in racemes, panicles, pairs or solitary, male and female often coaxial, opening at night. The receptacle-tube is shortly campanulate to cylindrical with five sepals. The five petals are yellow, white or light green in color. The three stamens are inserted near the base of the tube on free filaments. Two anthers are bithecous, one monothecous, usually coherent in a head with duplicate or triplicate thecae, containing 3-6-porate to 4-10-pantoporate, echinate, large to very large pollen (polar axis 61-208 µm, equatorial axis 68-196 µm, (Khunwasi 1998, Barth et al. 2005)). The ovary is globose, ovoid or oblong with 1-3 placentae and 2-30 ascending ovules. The style is erect, linear, inserted on a basal nectary with three dilated, reflexed, strongly papillose or smooth stigmata. The fruits are small, dry, indehiscent, smooth, with a firm, thin wall, ripening green, red, brown or black, often with very bitter taste. The 1-30 seeds are embedded in loose cellular pulp, compressed, erect, irregularly ovate or oblong, triangular or dagger-shaped, truncate and apically tricornute. The testa is brown, rigid and smooth, woody, without a distinct margin.

About 75 species, which grow along forest margins, in clearings, in and riverine forest mainly in tropical South America, a few in Central America, Mexico and the Southern US, one species endemic in Fernando de Noronha Island, one species, C. africana in West and Central Africa and in Madagascar; one species, C. martiana, introduced to Indonesia (Java).

Cayaponia (incl. Selysia) is the largest genus in the tribe Cucurbiteae and is sister lineage to the monotypic Abobra and both are phylogenetically close to the morphologically similar Cionosicys (Schaefer et al. 2009; Schaefer & Renner 2011). The genus was named after the Kayapó tribe of Brazil.
